By 1981 he also incorporated two Boss CE2 chorus pedals. His debut 1978 solo album and Final Cut in particular feature the pedal. The UniVibe was replaced by the MXR Phase 90 in medio 1974, which was widely used on the WYWH album.īetween 1977-83 the Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress flanger would be David’s main modulation effect. In early 1972 he featured the UniVibe in his rig and the pedal was notably used on Breathe. Gilmour has been using Leslies since late 1968 and continued with different rotating speakers in his live setup up to 1994. The idea was to capture the sound of a rotating speaker and the Doppler effect. By the mid and late 70s, companies like Electro Harmonix and Roland/Boss had also created the first flanger and chorus pedals. The phaser pedal appeared in the early 70s with Oberheim, Maestro and MXR among others.
The more the unit was in need of maintenance, the more pronounced the chorus effect would get. Likewise, when the tape and machinery on the old echo machines would wear down it created a subtle modulation. Back in the early days of studio trickery, setting up two tape recorders and slowing one of them down, would create a haunting phasing or flanging (Gilmour did this on A Great Day for Freedom). Modulating a guitar tone is an old trick.
